  •  Security: Both the protocols seek the help of PPP to assure utmost security. However, L2TP is supposed to have an upper hand over PPTP owing to the fact that in addition to the user user-level authentication provided by both the protocols, L2TP also offers computer-level authentication. 
  •  Speed: PPTP uses 128-bit key encryption and hence is expected to possess lesser overhead resulting into faster speed and higher efficiency. With double encapsulation, L2TP  is comparably slower than PPTP and also lags behind in efficiency. But this increases its security level.
  • Port Support: PPTP uses the help of TCP port 1723 and GRE, with protocol 47. But unfortunately, it can be blocked easily by limiting the GRE protocol. L2TP/IPSec on the other hand, use UDP that could be useful for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), X.25 and Frame Relay. Even L2TP is easy to set up but as compared to PPTP, it may require a little bit more effort on the part of users. The reason being shortage of the built in support that PPTP enjoys in abundance.

Both the protocols are useful in serving disctinct purposes, hence the decision of which one to select depends on the individual requirements of the users. L2TP would be suitable option if security is the major concern. For unrestricted access as well, it would be more feasible. However, when it comes to assuring speed, PPTP is better of the two as it is low on encryption and hence accompanies less overhead.
